Shakespeareの面白さ

私の興味の一つは、「聖書が文学作品にどのように引用されどのように影響を与えているかをさぐる」ことである。

聖書とShakespeare。この偉大な作品は私の手に負えないものであるが、出来る範囲で追求していきたいテーマである。

Macbeth　Scene II　の冒頭

Duncan

.  What bloody man is that?  He can report,なにものだ、あの血まみれの男は？

     As seemeth by his plight, of the revolt あの様子から察すれば、反乱軍に関する

     The newest state.新しい情報が聞けるだろう。

Malcolm.  This is the sergeantあの男です、

     Who like a good and hardy soldier fought私が敵の手に捕らえられそうになったとき

     ‘Gainst my captivity.  Hail, brave friend!勇敢にも救ってくれたのは。よく帰ってきた、

     Say to the King the knowledge of the broil戦場を離れたときどのような状況であったか

     As thou didst leave it.王に伝えてくれ。(訳　小田島雄志)

What bloody man is that?　ここに登場する血みどろの士官は、「勇敢」と「忠誠」など英雄的理想を表わす。

だが一方、聖書的連想では”bloody man”は「裏切り者」「悪魔の手下」の意味が強く、ここの血のイメージもマクベスのbloody deedへの伏線と読むべきである。(Milward, Hollowayなどの説)　(大修館　Shakespeare　Macbeth　今西雅章)による解説である。

英語による注解書によれば

詩編　16章7節

The Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
ish damim, the man of bloods; for he who has the spirit of a murderer, will rarely end with one blood shedding. So the Jews, who clamoured for the blood of our Lord, added to that, as far and as long as they could, the blood of his disciples.　（Adam Clarke Commentary）

16:7

And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial:

[2.] Those that are cruel: Thou wilt abhor the bloody man; for inhumanity is no less contrary, no less hateful, to the God of mercy, whom mercy pleases. Liars and murderers are in a particular manner said to resemble the devil and to be his children, and therefore it may well be expected that God should abhor them. These were the characters of David's enemies; and such as these are still the enemies of Christ and his church, men perfectly lost to all virtue and honour; and the worse they are the surer we may be of their ruin in due time.　（Matthew　Henry  Commentary）

誠に面白い。Shakespeareは詩編が頭にあってMacbethのこの箇所を書いているとなるとその手法は誠に巧妙で観客は拍手喝采したことであろう。

どさくさ騒ぎ

今日から新宿の朝日カルチャでShakespeareのMacbethが始まった。

冒頭の場面

First Witch

     When shall we three meet again?　いつまた三人、会うことに？

     In thunder, lightning, or in rain?　雷、稲妻、雨のなか？

Second Witch

     When the hurly-burly's done,　どさくさ騒ぎがおさまって

     When the battle's lost, and won.　戦（いくさ）に勝って負けたとき。(訳は小田島雄志）

hurly-burlyの説明

commotion, confusion--originally used of noble fighting, but in the sixteenth century commonly confined to the confusion of civil war (Oxford World's Classics)

hurlyburlly=ommotion, tumult, uproar.日本語の「どさくさ」おように音のうちに意義を含んだ言葉である。OEDには’Formerly a more dignified word than now'tと注意してある。この種の重複語すなわち語頭の音を変えて繰り返す言葉は英語に非常に多い。

たとえば、'helter-skelter'=in confusion, in disorder;

'hodge-podge'=as mixture; 'willy-illy'(<will he nill he)=wheer he likes it or not.

H. B. Wheatleyは 1866年に  A Dictionary of Reduplicated Words in the English Language  'を出しておよそ600語ばかり集めている。それによるとそのほとんど半分は'h'で始まっている語である。(市川三喜）

Sir Thomas Moreの処刑

あるところでSir Thomas Moreという作品を読んでいる。Shakespeareが一部を担当したというので先生が選んで1月から読んでようやく4月8日に読了した。素晴らしい芝居で面白かった。

トーマスモアというとUtopiaという作品で有名である。政治家としても庶民の味方をした宰相であった。しかし、悲劇的に結末、死刑に処せられた。国王の離婚・結婚に反対したからである。

この作品でAct V 44

Gentleman Porter.  Before you enter throu the Tower gate,

　　　Your upper garment, sir, belongs to me.

More.  Sir, you shall have it, there it is.

                                               He gives him his cap.

Gentleman Porter.  The upmost on your back, sir, your mistake me.

という箇所で、上着を貰いたいと言ったのに対してモアは帽子を差し出す。

　聖書でイエスが十字架にかかる場面で「イエスの上着を兵士がくじでその服を分け合った。」とある。どうもそれとダブって見える。勿論、注釈書にはその説明がないが、私としてはそう感じたのでここにこれを書いている。

　聖書を文学的に引用し書くとなればそのようになるのだ。この辺が文学のおもしろさである。

　これからもそのような物が見つかれば紹介してみたい。

日本の春、

日本は桜の季節　今年はちょうど土曜、日曜と花見の見ごろです。日本では「春は曙．．．」と言われます。

英国のAprilとは

A MONTH noted for alternations of sunshine & showers(POD 1970)となっています。

Whan that Aprille with his shoures sote　4月がやわあらかい驟雨をもたらし

The droghte of Marche has perced to the rote　3月のひでりの根もとまで浸みとおり

Of which vertu engendred is the flour;　その精気から花が生まれてひらくとき。

　（Chaucer: The Canterbury Tales の 'The Prologue')　は私が36年前に大学院を受験したときの問題でした。懐かしい。
